Classroom design and educational trends for 2024

Trends 2024

Hello class of 2024!

Are we ready to take our learning and classrooms to the next level? As we welcome 2024 it is predictable that advancing technology continues to revolutionise the way we live, work and learn. If you have stepped into a classroom lately, as an adult, you may notice that the rows of desks facing the teacher’s desk and blackboard have been replaced by moveable sit stand desks, mobile whiteboards and trendy modular seating.

The new classroom design and educational furniture has evolved to match the technology we now rely on for teaching and learning. Pupils and students now have their own learning devices in the form of iPads, tablets and gaming devices making it easier to create separate learning groups. Learning spaces and classrooms are now platforms for focused learning, student engagement and inspiration.

So what can we expect in 2024?

Read on to learn more about how technology, exercise, movement and gaming is shaping the look and feel of the classroom in 2024.

Traditionally, in the classroom modular tables and classroom chairs were moved and reconfigured every now and then to accommodate larger class sizes or smaller learning groups. The standard layout of the classroom was rows and rows of desks facing the teacher with an expectation from students to sit still for the duration of the lesson.  With the advent of today’s technology and flexible nature of teaching and learning, classroom furniture is being moved around more frequently. Today’s technology in the classroom may feature multimedia lessons, game learning, virtual tours and augmented reality requiring a high level of engagement and movement from pupils. It’s worth considering the multipurpose aspect and flexible nature of furniture destined for the classroom in 2024 and beyond.

2. Learn with Brain and Body (LEARN BNB)

One of the latest trends expected to be prominent in 2024 is learn with Brain and Body (LEARN BNB). Experts and researchers are discovering that learning is easier and longer lasting if lessons and learning environments involve the body as well as the mind. Waving your arms up in the air or touching your toes (even your nose!) and walking around the room can help you learn faster!  Learn with Brain and Body recognises that it is no longer just a case of using the brain to learn, the whole body must be involved.

A report was carried out by the Nordic Council of Ministers indicates that 68% of Swedish school children are physically inactive. These findings will no doubt concern Swedish educational departments and perhaps lead to an increase in the use of the body and encouraged movement throughout the learning day.

Physical activity to improve learning ability will therefore become prominent during 2024 and certain activity-based furniture such as balance boards or low height climbing walls will be popular to support movement and learning.

3. Gamification

Gamification has been redefining learning experiences in the digital learning environment in recent years and is gaining more traction in 2024.  Driven by engaging content and interactive technology, gamification in eLearning has emerged as a popular approach to education. There are many benefits to introducing gaming into the classroom, below are some:

1. Engagement: Games are inherently engaging, and gamifying education can capture students' interest and maintain their focus on learning tasks.

2. Motivation: By incorporating elements such as points, levels, badges, and leaderboards, gamification can motivate students to actively participate and strive for achievement.

3. Personalisation: Gamification allows for personalised learning experiences, where students can progress at their own pace and receive immediate feedback based on their performance.

4. Skill Development: Games often require problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and other skills that are valuable for academic and real-world success. Gamified activities can provide opportunities for students to develop these skills in a fun and engaging way.

5. Accessibility: Gamification can make learning more accessible and inclusive by providing multiple entry points, allowing students of varying abilities to participate and succeed.

As schools, colleges and universities embrace gamification there may be potential to create gaming zones in some areas, consisting of comfy low level modular seating such as the veloo and mobile low stools such as the Hexo and Toadie stools.

4. Social and emotional learning (SEL)

SEL1

The COVID-19 pandemic turned the educational system upside down by forcing over 1.2 billion students worldwide out of school for an unusually lengthy period of time. This unavoidable disruptive change made online learning compulsory and created several educational technology (edtech) companies to come forward to bring much needed innovation to the industry.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is about children’s social and emotional skills within educational settings, alongside their academic skills. This can include developing young people’s relationships, communication skills, decision making, self-esteem and behavioral patterns. SEL learning takes place across various settings, including schools, homes, communities and it is integrated into both formal and informal educational experiences. Although SEL is not taught or featured within the curriculum, at some schools it’s a method which has proven to be extremely successful so will be high on the agenda for 2024. SEL contributes to creating safe and supportive learning environments where students feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.

5. Online learning

Online Learning

Online courses such as Udemy and Coursea have already made a big impact and there is a significant increase in the marketshare  of companies in this field.

Online learning will continue to be prominent during 2024 and an array of educational furniture solutions can support those who are undertaking online courses and educational programs.

To create a classroom or learning environment in tune with online learning there are many acoustic pod and individual focused pods furniture solutions which support this. These solutions provide a place of peace and solitude allowing the user to focus on the online course.

6. Artificial Intelligence

AI

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom is improving education in several ways by providing personalised learning, intelligent tutoring, and the generation of smart content.

One of the benefits of incorporating AI into the classroom is the ability to provide students with a more personalised learning experience. AI programs and algorithms can analyse student information and adapt to their learning styles, providing useful feedback and recommendations that are tailored to their individual needs and abilities.

This helps to keep students engaged and motivated and can lead to improved academic performance. Additionally, the introduction of AI into the classroom can introduce pupils and students at an early stage in their lives so that when they reach the workplace, they will not feel overwhelmed by the advent of this technology.

Throughout 2024 there is still an emphasis on maintaining AI as human-centric, enhancing human capabilities rather than replacing them.

Conclusion:

The pandemic accelerated the integration of online and hybrid learning models, fostering greater flexibility and accessibility for students worldwide. By staying attuned to emerging trends and leveraging the opportunities they present, we can collectively propel education forward into a future characterised by excellence, equity and empowerment for all learners.

The educational landscape of 2024 will be marked by dynamic shifts and transformative trends that have reshaped traditional paradigms of teaching and learning. From the widespread adoption of immersive technologies to the prioritisation of personalised learning experiences. Educators and institutions are embracing innovation to meet the diverse needs of learners in the digital age.
