Markerboard, dry-erase board, dry-wipe board pen-board and interactive whiteboard are some of the terms used to describe what we know simply as whiteboard. Whatever name you attach to them the popularity of whiteboards increased rapidly in the mid-1990s and now is used widely in school classrooms and other study environments. The history of the whiteboard dates back to the late 50’s. We discovered that there are two different accounts of the history of the whiteboard: one from the US and one from the UK. The UK version goes like this: the white board was invented by Martin Heit, a photographer. His idea was developed to simply take notes during telephone conversation. He realised that notes could be written using a marker pen and easily erased using a damp cloth or tissue. The first whiteboards were made out of film laminate with the same glossy finish found on film negatives.
