Beyoncé Formation Scholars awards 2017-18

A good education is invaluable. This is something that’s understood by both teachers in the classroom and parents at the school gates – as well as other people much further afield. Take, for example, the sheer number of celebrities who over the years have donated money to fund certain individuals through school, college and university. This includes famous faces like model Chrissy Teigen, rapper Nicki Minaj and grime artist Stormzy.

In 2017, Beyoncé became the most recent star to show her appreciation for the value of education. The singer – famed for songs such as Single Ladies and Crazy in Love – launched what she called the ‘Formation Scholars' awards for the 2017-18 academic year. The four institutions involved in the scheme are Berklee College of Music in Boston, Howard University in Washington, D.C., Parsons School of Design in New York City and Spelman College in Atlanta.

The original announcement made headlines when it was posted on the singer’s website. The explanation read: “Four scholarships will be awarded, one per college, to female incoming, current or graduate students pursuing studies in creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies.”

The scholarships – worth $25,000 each – opened to four students in its first year. In order to be selected, applicants had to submit an essay about Beyonce’s visual album Lemonade. This piece of writing had to explain how the hit record had inspired them to achieve their educational goals. In addition, those who applied also had to hold a strong GPA (grade point average).

One of the first people to praise Beyoncé was former First Lady Michelle Obama. She said that the singer was a ‘role model’ for setting up the scheme. A tweet at the time read: “Always inspired by your powerful contributions @Beyonce. You are a role model for us all. Thank you for investing in our girls.”

Beyonce herself didn’t attend any form of higher education beyond high school. However, a class dedicated to her life – titled Beyoncé, Gender and Race – was made available at Copenhagen University in September 2017. This course is being taught similarly to other modules in cultural studies.

It’s clear that there’s a huge emphasis on education right now. If you are a head teacher and want to further invest in the future of your pupils, you can do so by purchasing new school desks or new school chairs from Edu-Quip. The range available is designed for the comfort and practicality of people learning in classrooms, meaning there’s no limit to what they can achieve.
